Pineapple Essence

An ester called ethyl butanoate is present in pineapples.
This is the ester functional group.

Esters are organic compounds that contain an ester functional group. An ester functional group is a COO group.

Esters are named from the alcohols and carboxylic acids they were created from :

(Eg. methanol + ethanoic acid => methyl ethanoate + water)

Ingredients:

Sulfuric acid

Ethanol

Butanoic acid


Sulfuric acid

Precautions: highly corrosive and if spilt, dilute with lots of water. 

Ethanol

Measure out 14.4cm^3 of ethanol in a measuring cylinder.

Warning: highly flammable.

Butanoic acid

Measure out 23.2cm^3 of butanoic acid in a measuring cylinder.

Warning: corrosive and very unpleasant odor.
